Couple undergoes life-changing surgery together

Doctors at Piedmont hospital encourage couple to get bariatric surgery together because of accountability.

ATLANTA - It’s a big day for a Newnan couple looking to improve their health by losing weight, and they’ve invited all of us along for their journey.

They’re undergoing back-to-back bariatric surgeries at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital Tuesday morning.

Jacob and Angela Harrison, both 38-years-old, have been married 10 years. They are both undergoing a bariatric surgery called the duodenal switch this morning. Doctors say it's more aggressive than gastric bypass.

They both have struggled with their weight for years and said they are determined to go through this together and hold each other accountable.

Angela said this surgery isn't about appearance.

"It's never been cosmetic for me and Jacob. We just want to be able to do and go like we used to. We have a lot of things we want to do," she said.

She wants to improve her mobility and avoid obesity-related health issues. They’ve tried diets and exercise routines and have been unsuccessful with dropping the weight and keeping it off.

You can re-watch the surgeries as they happened live. Angela’s surgery was at 7:30 a.m. and her husband’s was at 10:40 a.m.
