Carjacking leads to dramatic police chase on I-285

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Two people were taken into custody following a shooting and a police chase along Interstate 285 northbound Tuesday afternoon.

The chase began after an attempted armed robbery and shooting on Glencroft Place in Lithonia.

DeKalb County Police said a 77-year-old man with his 9-year-old grandson pulled into the driveway of his home in the 5200 block of Glencroft Place and a car pulled in behind him. Investigators said two armed men jumped out of the car and approached the man. The man told police that he thought he was going to be robbed, so he backed his car into the suspects' car.

The suspects fired on the man, who was grazed by a bullet in the back of his head. Police said the victim, identified by family members as Luther Tookes, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspects ran from the home to an adjacent street where they carjacked an AT&T van. They fired at the truck, grazing the AT&T driver. Police said that driver would also be okay.

Police pursued the truck from the subdivision to I-285 northbound. As the truck entered I-285, it appeared to side-swipe another vehicle. During the chase, at least two of the police cars were struck by the truck, before the truck was boxed in against the median wall near Chamblee-Tucker Road.

Both men were taken into custody. No other injuries were reported.
