LITHIA SPRINGS, Ga. -- A former NFL player is among two men in jail after allegedly trying to rob a store and then running from police.
Decatur, Georgia native and former NFL defensive end Quanterus R. Smith was one of two suspects who Douglasville investigators said went into the AT&T store located on Thornton Road in Lithia Springs. Armed with a handgun the two demanded money and Apple brand merchandise from the employees before leaving the scene.
Douglas County deputies attempted to pull over a 2013 Kia Rio driven by Smith after dispatch put out an alert for the getaway vehicle. But just as the car appeared to be stopping at a local gas station, the driver took off instead.
Deputies ultimately gave chase to the fleeing car before they performed a PIT maneuver near Thornton Road and Interstate West Parkway.
Both Smith and his passenger, Brandon Byse, were arrested and charged with armed robbery and denied bond.
Smith was also charged with felony fleeing and attempting to elude, misdemeanor theft by receiving and possession of a handgun during the commission of a felony.
According to NFLDraftScout.com, Smith has held a handful of short-lived stints with multiple NFL teams including the Denver Broncos and New York Jets. He also held short stints with the Jets' and Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squads before becoming a free agent and signing with the Detroit Lions.
However, he's no longer listed on the Lions team roster.
