GBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Auburn, Ga.

We're now learning more about a shooting that left a suspect in serious condition and why the officer said he opened fire.

AUBURN, Ga. -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to the scene following an officer-involved shooting in Auburn, Ga. that left a suspect in serious condition.

Details are still limited, but officials confirmed that the shooting happened at 330 Wages Road. Based on the preliminary investigation, the GBI reports that Auburn police were sent to a domestic disturbance in the area around 4 p.m. Officer Billy Willis arrived and was told by a woman at the residence that a man - the alleged aggressor - had left the scene and run into a wooded area behind the home.

Sgt. Jeff Scott then arrived and began searching the wooded area where he found 46-year-old Stephen Frank Nichols. Police said Nichols attempted to give false information - pretending to not be the person police were searching for.

Authorities told the GBI that Nichols then drew a gun and fired at the officer. Sgt. Scott responded by returning fire and hitting Nichols multiple times. Nichols was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center. The officers were not injured.

The GBI has taken over the investigation into what happened. What they find will be turned over to the Barrow County District Attorney's Office for review.
