Gwinnett Police investigate racist graffiti on house

Residents describe the Oakland Downs community as friendly and family-oriented, but they were shocked to see racist, hate-filled graffiti on a neighbor’s home Thursday morning.

"This neighborhood is really multicultural. I would never expect that. Everybody is very close knit and family-oriented," said Ayana Hazel.

The racial epithets were spray painted on a house on Oakland Hills way; one on the garage door and another on the side of the home.

The woman who lives in the townhouse had just moved in with her two children, neighbors told 11Alive's Valerie Hoff. She discovered the spray-painted racist words before leaving for work Thursday morning.

"She was dumbfounded. She said, 'I'm not even black; I'm Hispanic,'" Shanelle Moore, her neighbor, said.

Painters, who were hired by the homeowners association, covered up the obscenities by noon. But what remains was sadness, hurt and fear.

"I'm in an interracial marriage, so it hits close to home. It's like, being here now, I don’t feel safe and I wonder what they’ll do next," Moore said.

Police are investigating, but no arrests have been made.
