Man, woman arrested after standoff, setting home on fire

TALKING ROCK, Ga. -- Pickens County officials confirmed Saturday that they have taken a man and woman into custody after a standoff.

The Pickens County Sheriff's office was called out around 1 p.m. to the area of Old Talking Rock Road and Twin Mountain Lakes Road in Talking Rock, Ga.

A spokesperson for the department said that when deputies approached a home in the area, a man inside, later identified as Tony Pettigrew, told them he was armed and did not want them there.

Deputies then pulled back to a distance until he fired a weapon from inside the home.

Over the course of the original meeting with them, he fired a total of two rounds from a weapon while yelling at deputies.

Officials said the man's wife, Robin McDaniel Pettigrew, was in the home so they treated the standoff as a hostage situation. But they later learned that the woman inside was actually involved in the standoff.

After 7 hours of tense negotiations, police said the two fled out the back door of the residence after setting the home on fire.  They were apprehended by SWAT officers shortly after leaving.

Both admitted to drug use during the day and were taken to be evaluated at a local hospital with charges pending. Both already had outstanding warrants, police said.

The Cherokee County SWAT team assisted in the operation.
