Police: 2 women, 4 children hit by distracted river in Riverdale

RIVERDALE, Ga. -- Police believe a driver was distracted by his cell phone when he accidentally struck two women and four children along a Riverdale area road late Wednesday.

The incident happened around 8:16 p.m. along Valley Hill Road near Apache Lane, Clayton County police reported.

That's where first responders found the victims - one still in a stroller. Since the accident the children, ranging in age from 2 to 6 years old, have all been released from the hospital. However of the two remaining victims, a 36-year-old woman is in critical condition and the 21-year-old woman is listed as serious.

Preliminary investigations revealed that 28-year-old Darius Demond Mack was driving east on Valley Hill Road while distracted by the use of his cell phone when he veered off the radway and onto the should of the road.

That's where the family was walking when police say Mack hit them.

He now faces two counts of serious injury by motor vehicle, reckless driving, distracted driving failure to maintain lane.
