Sheriff: Teen suspect robbed student at gunpoint at Newton High School

COVINGTON, Ga. -- A student is facing criminal charges after officials said they committed an armed robbery late last week.

According to a Newton County Sheriff's Office incident report, deputies got a call from staff at Newton High School around 1 p.m. May 5 informing them that a student had been robbed of $50 at gunpoint.

11Alive reached out to the Newton County School District who confirmed the incident and that it was a student who pulled the gun.

In a brief statement, a spokesperson told 11Alive that in addition to criminal charges, administration will be disciplining the student according to the rules listed in the student code of conduct.

That juvenile suspect could now be charged with felony armed robbery, having weapons on school property and violating Georgia street gang terror laws.
