Shootout in Villa Rica leaves one dead, bystander shot

The shooting happened in the area of Cleghorn and McCauley streets.

VILLA RICA, Ga. -- A shootout between two people has ended with one person dead and another injured in Villa Rica.

The shooting happened Sunday evening at 6:22 in the area of Cleghorn and McCauley Street, officials with the Villa Rica Police Department told 11Alive.

Police say it started with a dispute earlier that afternoon between 36-year-old Marko Xavier Burton and 31-year-old Julius Walker. 

Walker was at the Cleghorn St. location when Burton pulled up. He stepped out of his vehicle with a gun in his hand. Witnesses say the dispute between the two escalate to both of them firing shots. 

A bystander was struck by one of the shots. He was treated and released at Tanner Medical Center. 

Burton was struck by several shots. He was transported to the same hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

Walker was not injured. 

Investigators discovered the gun Burton used had been reported stolen out of Paulding County. Walker was found to have an active warrant out for a probation violation. He was arrested on that charge.

Villa Rica police say the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Any witnesses that have not already spoken to investigators are asked to call Captain Shaddix or Detective Terry at (678) 840-1322.
