DeKalb 'candy lady' targeted in home invasion

DeKalb County Police are investigating an overnight home invasion at the apartment of a woman known as the neighborhood "candy lady."

DECATUR, GA. - DeKalb County Police are investigating an overnight home invasion at the apartment of a woman known as the neighborhood "candy lady."

It happened after midnight at the Laurel Mill Apartments on Tregoney Drive in unincorporated Decatur. Police said someone knocked on the door of an apartment and said he wanted to buy cigarettes.

Then two men forced their way into the apartment and began to fight with a Torey McCommons who lived there. He was shot in the chest and critically wounded.

Police said the gunmen also shot Jessie Baptiste in the leg as she tried to crawl out a window with her baby in her arms. Her wound is not considered life-threatening.

McCommons was taken to Grady Hospital and was listed in critical condition.

The gunmen grabbed a jar of coins and took off, according to police.

Police could not clarify if the female victim is the "candy lady." According to police, several people were in the apartment at the time but were not cooperating with investigators.

According to CrimeMapping.com, there were a number of crimes in the area in recent months, including four assaults, six car break-ins, 9 thefts and three robberies.
