Atlanta Public Schools announces pay increases

ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta Public Schools officials say employees will receive their first pay increase in more than five years.

In a release Thursday, district spokesman James Malone said the district-wide raise was announced by the Atlanta Board of Education in late June and represents and overall $12 million increase in the district's salary budget.

Malone says all employees who were hired before July 2014 will receive a salary adjustment for the upcoming school year either in installments or in a one-time payment, depending on when the employee was hired.

Malone says the average raise will be about 4 percent.

District officials say staff salaries were frozen in 2009 because of cuts to education funding throughout the state.
