Ga. Milestones Assessment System to replace CRCT

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Education has announced a new testing system to replace the CRCT.

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System will be rolled out during the 2014-15 school year. It will include open-ended questions to better gauge students' concept mastery.

"We need to know that students are being prepared, not at a minimum-competency level but with rigorous, relevant education, to enter college, the workforce or the military at a level that makes them competitive with students from other states," State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge said in a release.

The state of Georgia awarded a five-year, $107.8-million contract bid to CTB/McGraw-Hill to develop the new testing system.

Barge said the state expects early Georgia Milestones scores to be lower than the previous years' CRCT scores, but that the test should bring Georgia's tests in line with other indicators of how students are performing.
