Math teacher gives lesson in life skills

HAPEVILLE, Ga – Dr. Jeanne Rast works to make sure her students at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School never experience math anxiety.

"I love opportunity to help a child who's having trouble with math," said Rast. "Motivating them to love math."

On a recent day, she has them figure out an actual problem she's had at home with her dogs making things difficult for anyone making deliveries to her home.

"There was a fixed perimeter for a fence and I had to keep my dogs in it while the UPS man came, which is really true," said Rast.

Her 8th grade class will make quadratic equations based on building a fence for the dogs.

Rast believes in giving assignments based on real-life.

"If you want a child to think about math. Then you give them something to think about. If they are good critical thinkers. If they're good problem solvers," said Rast.

"Dr. Rast is just awesome," said Karen Vogtner, principal "You can see the passion that she has that she brings to the classroom."

It's no wonder Rast is one of only two Georgia educators to win the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching from the national Science Foundation.
