UPDATE -- Contraflow officially began at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon, according to GDOT. Traffic is now flowing westbound in the east and westbound lanes.
As the Georgia coastline braces for Hurricane Matthew's impact, state officials are doing everything they can to help residents get out of the area.
On Thursday morning, Georgia State Patrol and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division announced all Interstate-16 eastbound lanes will be converted to westbound lanes as soon as possible. In doing so, all eastbound ramps will be closed.
The I-16 westbound conversion will go until Mile Marker 38 near Dublin.
