Athens Police Officer shot during disturbance call

ATHENS, Ga. -- An Athens police officer was shot by a suspect Sunday morning, as the suspect tried to take the officer's gun.

According to an Athens Police press release, officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at the Fairways @ Jennings Mill Apartments just before noon.

Police say 28-year -old James M. Marcantonio was banging on the door and attempting to gain entrance into the caller's apartment.

As an officer arrived and confronted the suspect, Marcantonio became combative and struggled with the officer.

Witnesses told police Marcantonio attempted to take the officer's weapon, and the officer was shot once.

Once more police arrived, Marcantonio was arrested without further incident.

The injured officer has not been identified and was taken to a local hospital for treatment

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating. Marcantonio faces criminal charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery on a police officer.
