Police shoot suspect who allegedly fired at officers in NW Atlanta

GBI investigates officer-involved shooting

ATLANTA -- Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Tilden St. in northwest Atlanta.

It happened around 3:40 Thursday morning.

Two neighbors called to report someone breaking into cars on the street and two officers responded. When they arrived, police said they spotted a suspect, an adult male, hiding behind a car in a driveway.

Capt. Clif Johnson, with Atlanta police, said the suspect then jumped up and started shooting at the officers. An officer fired back and shot the suspect multiple times, including in the neck and chest.

The suspect then ran into the woods where he was found by police officers who responded to the scene. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in "bad shape." He remained in stable condition Thursday afternoon.

The officer received a minor injury to his left thigh and was treated at the scene. Police found a gun and ammunition while canvassing the area.

The GBI has taken over the investigation.
