Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting in Powder Springs

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. -- The GBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect Monday afternoon in Powder Springs.

According to Cobb County Sheriff's Office, the incident happened at 4817 W. McEachern Woods Drive and involved the Cobb County Sheriff's Office, the Paulding County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshal's South East Regional Fugitive Task Force.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Michael Wayne Smashey, had warrants in Cobb and Paulding counties. He was wanted for an armed robbery and aggravated assault at a Subway in Hiram this past weekend, according to the Paulding County Sheriff Department, who was serving those warrants. Authorities said he was also wanted for armed robbery at a Waffle House in Cobb County.

U.S. Marshals were serving the arrest warrant for Paulding County and Cobb County authorities.

According to a statement from the GBI "Smashey made an offensive move towards the officers with a knife. At this time, officers fired at the subject fatally wounding him. No officers were injured."

"The GBI will conduct a thorough investigation of the incident," said GBI Inspector Sherry Lang. "When the investigation is completed the file will be turned over to the DA."
