GORDON COUNTY, Ga. -- Authorities say most animals are accounted for but at least two have died after an animal shelter fire in Gordon County, Wednesday evening.
The fire happened at the Gordon County Animal Shelter on Harris Beamer Road late Wednesday evening. Officials said multiple stations responded and found the facility already burning heavily upon arrival. Authorities said many of the animals were rescued by residents and firefighters.
By 9:45 p.m., fire officials reported that the fire was under control and that all the dogs were rescued from the flames but that three ran off. The remaining 20 are being housed by Calhoun Animal Shelter or by shelter volunteers. Sadly, two cats being housed at the shelter died.
The state fire marshal's office has been called in to investigate.
