Police: Man kills high school student who intervened in fight

Man shoots teen trying to mediate dispute

WINDER, Ga – A Barrow County man has been charged with murdering a teenager who tried to intervene in an argument involving one of his sons.

Roberto Arellano, 45, of Winder, shot and killed Jose Tovar-Campuzano, 18, of Athens, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, on Nov. 4.

Police responded to a call around 9:30 pm and found Arellano rendering aid to Tovar-Campuzano. The victim was taken to an Athens hospital where he later died.

According to authorities, Tovar-Campuzano, a student at East Jackson Comprehensive School, was tried to mediate a dispute between Arellano’s son and another person that had begun earlier in the day.

According to the police report, Arellano believed that Tovar-Campuzano and two other Hispanic males were threatening to beat up his son. Authorities said that Arellano came out of the house and shot Tovar-Campuzano in the abdomen.

Arellano’s other son also told police, “Guys came to our house to fight my brother.  They wanted to start something with my brother. Then my dad came out with a rifle and shot the guy and the other two guys went running up the street. Then we put pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding.”

Police recovered a rifle and a shell casing from the scene.

Arellano is being held at the Barrow County jail and has been charged with felony murder and aggravated assault.
