Movie character based on 10-year-old Atlanta boy

ATLANTA -- When Will Penn invited his friend to speak his school it wasn't because Cory Weissman is a basketball star, or because a movie is based on his life.

Those things are true, but Will invited Cory to share his story with the student body at Our Lady of the Assumption in Atlanta as his friend. He's a friend that went through the same challenge as Will.

"I had a life changing stroke about five years ago," Weissman said.

He calls it life changing, but not life changingly bad.

"At the time it was the worst thing that ever happened to me but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise," he said.

Weissman's freshmen year at Gettysburg College, not too long after he'd made his 1000th basket, he felt a piercing headache in the weight room.

Doctors diagnosed it as a rare stroke that left him struggling to walk.

"I knew I was determined to get back out on the court," he said.

No one expected he would, but Cory pushed and by the next season he got back in the game.

"If it stopped there that would be the best day of my life," he said.

However he didn't stop there. He kept going until he nailed the impossible shot.

"It was the shot heard around the world," he said.

Video of that shot made it to Hollywood, where someone penned a movie about his recovery. It also featured a plot line about his friendship with Will Penn.

"He has inspired me. If he can get better that means I can get better too," Penn said.

Will reached out to Cory for inspiration after he heard about his triumph.

"I was looking to inspire him and help him through his journey and it's honestly been somewhat of a role reversal," Weissman said.

They become great friends. The basketball player and a 10 year old, connected by a stroke of bad fortune that led to something great.

"This terrible tragedy turned in to a blessing," Weissman said.
