Fire under bridge causes Brookhaven's Buford Highway to close

Buford Highway was closed in both directions Monday night because of a debris fire underneath a bridge.

BROOKHAVEN, Ga -- Buford Highway was closed in both directions Monday night because of a debris fire underneath a bridge.

According to Brookhaven police, DeKalb County fire crews battled a small blaze underneath the roadway's Peachtree Creek bridge.

Buford Highway was closed in both directions between North Druid Hills and West Druid Hills roads.

After the fire was put out, DeKalb fire officials called for an arson investigator, according to Brookhaven police. The Georgia Department of Transportation was also notified.

Traffic was diverted onto W. Druid Hills Road while Buford Highway was closed.

"It was a small fire, and there's no reason to believe it will put the bridge out of commission," said Maj. Brandon Gurley of the Brookhaven police department.
