Man pulled from Lake Lanier dies

BUFORD, Ga. -- The Department of Natural Resources confirms that a man first listed in critical condition after a near drowning in Lake Lanier has died.

The incident happened in the 1200 block of Buford Dam Road NE outside of Buford Georgia around 3:45 p.m.

There, several agencies were on the lookout for the man in his late 40s who witnesses said went under just outside the designated swimming area.

Members of the Gwinnett Fire Swiftwater Rescue Team located the man around 4:41 p.m. between 50 to 60 feet from the shore in about 8 feet of water.

A Gwinnett Fire spokesperson said the unnamed victim was unresponsive and immediately taken to a waiting ambulance in critical condition but was not said to be deceased when transported.

However, the DNR later confirmed that the victim had died.

Officials at the scene said the man was on an outing with family when the incident occured.

The Gwinnett County Police Department has taken over to handle reports.
