Man who died after being pulled from Lake Lanier identified

BUFORD, Ga. -- Department of Natural Resources officials have released the name of a man who died after being pulled from Lake Lanier in critical condition Saturday afternoon.

DNR spokesperson Mark McKinnon identified the victim as 48-year-old Arsenio Urbano Santiago of Atlanta.

First responders said Urbano's body was recovered around 6:40 p.m. near Buford Dam Park after he went under while spending the day with family earlier in the day.

DNR officials along with members of the Gwinnett Fire Swiftwater Rescue Team and Hall and Forsyth County authorities were involved with the search.

Witnesses said the victim was outside the designated swimming area and about 50 to 60 feet offshore when he went under around 4:41 p.m.

Gwinnett Fire officials said the man was immediately taken to a waiting ambulance once he was found. But the DNR later confirmed Urbano's death.

Why he went under at the park has still not been released.
