CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- Officials have confirmed that remains found in Haralson County earlier in the week by hunters are those of a mother from Cartersville who has been missing for several weeks.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Medical Examiner's Office identified the remains of Heather McDonald on Wednesday. She had been missing since mid-September.
Several agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are continuing to look into the incident to uncover what led to McDonald's death.
On Wednesday, 11Alive broke the news that police had a person of interest in custody. Richard Harden, a convicted sex offender, was an acquaintance of the family.
Investigators believe he was known to frequent the area where McDonald's body was found.
However, family members said they do not believe he had anything to do with her death.
An autopsy has been scheduled to gather more information and could provide more answers.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cartersville Police Department at 770-382-2526 or the GBI at 706-624-1424.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information about her death.
