FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. – Cleveland Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert was arrested for suspicion of DUI, 11Alive has learned.
Shumpert was pulled over at a traffic stop for a lane change violation in Fayette County, 22 miles outside of Atlanta on August 10.
When deputies made contact with the basketball star, he reeked of burnt marijuana and his eyes were bloodshot red, according to a police report.
Deputies say they informed Shumpert about his failure to maintain his lane. He apologized and advised he was using his GPS to return a rental car.
Shumpert told police that he smoked marijuana before leaving a friend’s home. He handed over a brown bag of Backwoods Honey Bourbon cigars which contained tobacco shavings.
The Cavaliers Guard went through a series of questions and testing before deputies on scene determined he was an “impaired driver and less safe to operate a motor vehicle”.
Deputies later found a “green leafy substance consistent with marijuana” in the truck of his vehicle.
He was charged with D.U.I., possession of marijuana, and failure to maintain lane.
It is unclear if Shumpert’s arrest will affect his standing with his team. The Cleveland Cavaliers released the following statement:
The Cavaliers have discussed the situation with Iman and will monitor the progression of the pending case. A court date has not been set at this point, and neither Iman or the team will have any additional comments while the matter progresses through the legal process.
Shumpert made a different kind of impression last month during the MTV Video Music Awards when he appeared in Kanye West’s music video “Fade” with his fiancée Teyana Taylor.
