NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Officials in Newton County have confirmed that an airplane landed on the shoulder of I-20 in Newton County.
The Georgia Department of Transportation reported that landing just after midnight near Mile Marker 95 between Covington and Social Circle. Covington-Newton County 911 reported that the aircraft had run out of fuel but managed to make a safe landing with no injuries.
The plane was eventually able to leave the shoulder by taxing with emergency services escorts. It is currently at Covington Municipal Airport
The FAA released this statement:
"A Cessna 172 made an emergency landing on Interstate 20 near Covington, GA at 11:45 pm September 11. The FAA will investigate."
