DALLAS, Ga. -- An 8-year-old girl has been killed in what Paulding County deputies believe was an accidental shooting.
11Alive is told that the mother was brushing the girl's hair when a 9mm, semi-automatic handgun, fell to the floor and discharged hitting both of them.
According to authorities, the mother is still in the hospital after surgery on her leg, however her condition was not revealed. Investigators plan to speak with her about the incident on Monday.
Along with the mother and child, there were three others in the house, the mother's adult son, who is in his early 20s, and two juvenile daughters. Both daughters are in the custody of DFCS, as of Monday afternoon.
Neighbors were understandably shocked.
"You know, we would talk and stuff like that and the young man that used to live there - he used to come to my job that I used to work at so just very nice people," a family friend told 11Alive. "When I got the message I was like, 'Oh, my gosh' and I woke up really nervous - really jittery because it was just scary."
