Lingerie shop owner pleads guilty to bribery

DORAVILLE, Ga. -- A Doraville lingerie shop owner has admitted to offering bribes to city employees to obtain a zoning change.

Jae Jun Bae, 35, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of honest services wire fraud.

According to information presented in federal court, Bae owns Moon Lingerie, located in the 5200 block of Buford Highway. He bought the business's building in April 2012. The building was zoned for retail use and could not be used as a wholesale location.

U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said in August 2012, Bae met with a Doraville city employee and offered that person an envelope full of cash in exchange for re-zoning the property. The employee refused to take the envelope and reported Bae to local police.

Bae requested a meeting with a member of Doraville's Community Development Department in October 2013. An undercover FBI agent joined the member at the meeting, where Bae agreed to pay $100,000 to have his property re-zoned to allow wholesale uses, according to Yates.

The defendant eventually made two payments totaling $8,000 to the staff member and undercover officer, with the promise that the money would secure a vote in favor of his re-zoning application. Instead, Yates said, Bae was arrested on Nov. 14, 2013. He was indicted in December 2013.

Bae will be sentenced in June.
