The Walking Dead Escape debuts in Atlanta

ATLANTA -- If you can't wait until fall for the new season of Georgia-filmed "The Walking Dead," there's another way to experience life with the undead.

A new interactive extension of the popular AMC show will debut at Phillips Arena on May 31.

"The Walking Dead Escape" is a zombie run experience that launched in 2012 at San Diego's Comic-Con. This year it's on tour across the county, offering fans a taste of what it would be like to endure a zombie takeover.

"Imagine a Zombie apocalypse -- you don't know what to expect, and that's what we are bringing to Phillips Arena," said event executive producer David Isaacs.

The event includes an obstacle course where fans choose between the roles of zombie and survivor.

"It's not just a race with a couple of zombies, it's really taking people from projecting themselves from the Walking Dead world to placing them in that world," Isaacs said.

Survivors attempt to avoid zombies during a 35- to 50-minute escape. Professional make-up artists will transform those who choose to be "Walkers" into zombies.

"People like to experience 'The Walking Dead' in different ways," Isaacs said.

Escape routes include a zombie-ridden Evacuation Zone; "Herd Highway," where survivors need to hide and flee zombies attracted by smells, sounds and quick movements; a Prison Gauntlet where survivors have to crawl through barricades and chain-link fences to break away from walkers; the hospital, where Rick wakes from a coma and confronts hoards of zombies; and a quarantine area, where FEMA teams test survivors for any zombie infections.

WWE Hall of Famer Booker T will sign autographs and take photos at the Walking Dead Escape Fan Fest from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. DMC of rap duo Run DMC will also make an appearance. Dancer Marquese Scott and his crew, Dragon House, will be doing a choreographed dance made up of walkers at 9 p.m. in the FanFest area

Tickets are sold at

The cost is $95 to be a walker and $75 to be a survivor, or $20 to simply watch the escape.
