Drag racer's car stolen in south Fulton County

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Authorities are searching for a stolen race car.

Palmetto police say thieves broke into drag racer David Tatum's 28-foot Gold Rush car trailer overnight and his race car and spare parts. Tatum had just come back from a race.

"They knew precisely how to go right in there and hit the lock rod, open it," said Tatum.

Now Tatum fears his 25-year passion may have come to an end in one night.

"I'm wiped out," Tatum said. "If I don't get that stuff back I'm done."

The thieves barely left a scratch, but there may still be a few clues.

"We were able to lift some latent prints from some of the vehicles that were on the property," said Palmetto Police Sgt. Lee Gragg.

Gragg says they've alerted law enforcement throughout the state and even contacted other racing enthusiasts.

"It was obviously very fast, very flashy looking," Gragg said. "It could be salvaged off for parts, or pieces."

Tatum hopes the thieves think twice and abandon the car. He says it wasn't insured, and he doesn't have the money to build another.

"I've just always worked hard and paid for stuff as I go, buy and sell and trade and work late at night, do without this to have that," Tatum said.
