SWAT standoff ensues after man calls 911, says he robbed store

Man arrested after SWAT situation

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A man was taken into custody Thursday morning after a SWAT standoff that began after he called 911 and said he robbed a convenience store.

The Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT team responded to a home in the 4100 block of Satellite Blvd. in unincorporated Duluth just after 3 a.m.

A person, later identified as 29-year-old Obafemi Temitope Jaji, barricaded himself in the home after calling police to say he robbed a convenience store.

"Police arrived and he would not come out, it escalated into a SWAT situation,"  Gwinnett County Police spokesperson Michele Pihera said.

At one point, Jaji said police would have to kill him to take him into custody, authorities said.

While police were negotiating with Jaji, officers were able to confirm that the store had been robbed.

SWAT team members were able to broach the door of the home, and saw that Jaji had a firearm in his hand.

Authorities used pepper spray and were able to take Jaji into custody around 8:30 a.m. Jaji was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the scene and then taken to Gwinnett County Medical Center.

Once he's released from the hospital, Jaji will be taken to Gwinnett County jail, where he faces a count of robbery by intimidation and one count of theft by taking.
