2 Ga. men pulled from Fla. waters; 1 dies

CLEARWATER BEACH, Fla. -- A 20-year-old metro Atlanta man is dead and another was hospitalized after the two were pulled from the Gulf of Mexico on the northern part of Clearwater Beach near Mandalay and Idlewild Friday evening.

Both men are from Gainesville, Ga., according to WTSP. Sources at the scene say the two men worked together and were on vacation. They were with a big group of people when the incident occurred, at about 6 p.m. Friday.

Authorities say 41-year-old Donald Duncan suffered a heart attack when he was pulled from the water by a Clearwater Police officer, and was taken to Morton Plant Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

The other man, Ryan Terry, was taken out of the water by crews from Clearwater Fire and Rescue and the US Coast Guard. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A cardiologist from Canada who was on the beach at the time of the rescue assisted authorities.

Duncan and Terry worked together in Georgia. The pair were in Florida on vacation with others and had been staying at a hotel in the Orlando area.

Authorities say a rip current was the cause of the incident.
