Police investigating possible gang ties in deadly home invasion

Possible gang ties in Jonesboro home invasion

JONESBORO, Ga. -- Police are investigating possible gang ties in a home invasion that left a young brother and his little sister dead in Jonesboro.

Daveon Coates, 15, and his sister, 11-year-old Tatiyana Coates, were gunned down early Saturday.

Neighbors said the family of seven moved to Jonesboro from Chattanooga, Tenn. A month ago, but little else is known about them. Police are working with with the Chattanooga Police Department to explore possible leads.

Clayton County police said an adult wasn't home during the invasion. The parents were out socializing when the kids were gun downed, according to authorities.

“It surprised and shocked all of us,” one neighbor said. “For something like that to happen to two little kids. And the others weren't even touched! Why didn't just tie them up or something.”

Authorities said nothing was taken from the home, and the suspects are still on the loose.

Neighbors continue to speculate what happened -- and why?

“The house has been empty for like two years almost,” the neighbor said. “And how anybody knew anyone was in the house? Because there was no car there. I didn't see any lights on -- unless they knew them."

Clayton County deputy cars were parked outside the house on Monday.

Authorities previously said a young child inside the home called 911 to report the crime. That 911 won't be released because it's part of the investigation, police said.
