GBI: Autopsy complete in Ella Grayce death

GBI still seeking cause and manner of death

POLK COUNTY, Ga. -- The GBI confirmed Wednesday morning the autopsy has been completed for 21-month-old Ella Grayce. The death of the Polk County toddler has left family and community members demanding justice for the little girl.

Polk County police, with assistance from the GBI, launched an investigation into Ella Grayce Pointer's death after she passed away on Sunday.

Ella was in the care of two men when she was hurt on Saturday. Police have not released details about what happened to her, but family members said emergency workers made disturbing discoveries.

Shellby Garner, the child’s mother, said she was working the third shift when she got a call that her daughter had stopped breathing.
“She was gone for 30 minutes and they revived her. Her heartbeat was all hers,” Garner said. “But she was already gone. Her body was there, but she was already gone.”

"They told us that she had sustained major brain injuries. Major organ injuries. Sexual abuse," said Joy Shell, the child’s grandmother.

Police have not made any arrests in connection with her death, however, 27-year-old Dustin Putnal was arrested for violating his probation. Putnal is the boyfriend of the child's mother.

The completion of the autopsy has not yet provided answers the family is seeking.

"At this time, the results (cause and manner of death) are pending further forensic testing and details from the investigation," a GBI spokesperson said in a written statement to 11Alive News.

Funeral services for the 21-month-old child will be held Friday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends Thursday night.
