Police: Veteran ambushed, killed as he opened garage door

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA. - Police say a 47-year-old man was gunned down before he let his house to take his wife to work Friday morning in Stone Mountain.

The incident happened around 6 a.m. in the 500 block of Mountain Oaks Parkway.

The couple opened their garage door and found three men waiting for them outside. At least one of them was armed.

Phillip Lamar Davis, a retired U.S. Marine, was killed in the ensuing struggle. His wife ran behind a bush before fleeing to a neighbor's house, where she called 911.

Daphne Sinclarr, who told 11Alive that she was the sister of the wife, said that she was contacted by the wife before she called 9-1-1. "My sister lives a good life. Clean. She works everyday so I'm not sure exactly what's going on."

Police are continuing to interview witnesses. No arrests were made.

According to DeKalb PD, the neighborhood has a "very strong home owner's association" and this type of activity does not normally occur there.
