Fake Ga. Power bill collector targeting business owners

ATLANTA - Business owners in Inman Park say they're being targeted by a sophisticated and elaborate scam in which someone is posing as a Georgia Power bill collector.

"I feel like I'm level-headed enough to know when I'm being scammed," restaurant owner Corey Phillips said. "But you know what, this is a good one."

Phillips says the person who called his restaurant, The One Eared Stag, had his personal account number and knew the amount he owed for his upcoming power bill.

"Someone gave me my account number and the correct amount on my bill," Phillips said.

That was enough to convince Phillips to give the person his credit card number. However, when the caller asked him to load a pre-paid credit card with money, Phillips realized it was a scam.

"Immediately called our banker and had them disconnect the card," Phillips said.

Phillips says he called the police and notified several nearby business. He says many of those business have since received calls from the bogus bill collectors.
