Lawrenceville man dies while diving off coast of Florida Keys

Responders tried to perform CPR, but he was pronounced dead.

KEY LARGO, Fla. -- A Lawrenceville, Ga. man died Monday morning while on a diving trip off the coast of the Florida Keys, officials confirm.

James Ringold, 52, was about 50 feet underwater around 10:15 a.m. when he was found unresponsive with his regulator out of his mouth, authorities said. Emergency responders retrieved his body and brought him aboard a boat and administered CPR. They transported the 52-year-old to Mariner's Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly later.

According to the Monroe County, Fla. Sheriff's Office, which has jurisdiction over the Florida Keys, Ringold was on the trip to the Spiegel Grove shipwreck with his wife. The dive spot, a sunken 510-foot U.S. Navy Landing Ship Dock, is located six miles off the coast of Key Largo.

The medical examiner's office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
