Fire guts Lawrenceville area home

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Authorities are still investigating after an early morning fire that damaged a home outside of Lawrenceville on Thursday.

The incident happened in the 600 block of Somerset Vale Drive SW around 9 a.m., officials said.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames showing from the basement door on the left-side of the two-story wood frame home.

The fire quickly spread from an exterior wall and floor system to the attic as responding firefighters stretched hose lines inside.

Eventually the intense fire forced firefighters out of the home as it broke through the roof.

Only one person, an adult male, was home at the time of the blaze but escaped unharmed.  However, he was taken to the hospital by paramedics for a medical complaint unrelated to the fire.

The cause is still under investigation but a neighbor reported hearing a loud explosion and then saw the homeowner running from the basement.

Due to the heavy fire damage, the American Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents who lived at the home - two adults and four children.
