Now, you can get your big fireworks right here in Georgia

For years, you had to cross state lines for your big bang, but now, larger fireworks are available close to home.

DULUTH, GA (WXIA) -- For years many of metro Atlanta residents have driven across state lines to Tennessee, South Carolina or Alabama to buy fireworks. But beginning Wednesday, they'll be available right here – close to home.

Some employers say it is more than just a 4th of July celebration – they say it will help bring jobs and money to the state.

One company has hired 32 people to staff one location to be ready when the law kicks in on Wednesday.

David Roper has worked with Phantom Fireworks for eight years, but the new Georgia legislation has changed his life. He relocated his family from South Carolina to Georgia as a result.

The Duluth Phantom Fireworks store manager says he has been on a first-name basis with many Georgia customers for years.

"When they come into our showroom, we are very happy to see them," he said. "Come in every year and they're local to this county and the counties around here."

Now, he can serve them at the Duluth location.

At Phantom, customers can get everything from small sparklers at 99 cents to what is aptly called "Grounds For Divorce" – at $1,500.

Growing up, Angelique Taylor's family used to cross state lines to buy her favorite firecrackers, but as Phantom's assistant manager in Duluth, she said she is excited to make her first purchase in her home state.

"With work, school and everything, you don't always have enough time to go out of the state just to get fireworks," she said. "And of course, now you can go right down the street, and its way more convenient."

But before lighting up Roman candles or firing up rockets, a few safety tips --

"Do not use alcohol while lighting your fireworks, that's the number one thing i can tell you," Roper said.

"From there, if you ever have a firework that doesn't go off, don't stick your head over it and look down to see if it's still lit," he said.

Fulton County Emergency Management says there is a plan for extra staffing due to the holiday, but they are not planning on extra personnel being on hand due to those large fireworks now becoming legal.

Phantom Fireworks has stores in Morrow, Duluth and Buford. Jake's Fireworks has three locations in metro Atlanta – in Kennesaw, Buford and Athens. TNT Fireworks has a supercenter in Cumming. In addition to their stores, all three retailers will have stands and tents across the metro area in a number of locations. Click the links to check their websites for additional information.
