Police: Stepdad facing charges after accidentally shooting child with BB gun

Stepfather facing charges in child shooting

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Public safety officials in DeKalb County confirm that a child was shot Sunday afternoon.

It was later discovered that the weapon was, according to police, a BB gun.

According to authorities, the call came in around 1 p.m. at an address in the 3500 block of Lakespur Terrace.

Police now say the child received a minor injury after the projectile struck but did not penetrate the skull. Thus far in the investigation, it appears that the shooting was accidental based on witness statements. The child is expected to be OK a family friend told 11Alive after speaking with the mother.

However, police have identified 23-year-old Jhakwan Williams as the shooter and said that he is in custody, though no formal charges have yet been filed.

According to a spokesperson with DeKalb County police, investigators don't yet know the circumstances that led to the shooting. The suspect told police that after the incident he threw the BB gun into a heavily wooded area so that other children couldn't get to it.

At this point the weapon has not been found and the investigation is ongoing.

No other information was available at this time.
