RIVERDALE, Ga. -- The man accused of fatally shooting a Riverdale police officer has been identified.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that 24-year-old Jerand Ross shot Major Greg Barney as officers attempted to serve a no-knock warrant at the Villages on the River apartment on Thursday.
According to the GBI, when officers made entry into the apartment, Ross ran out of a back door. Barney gave chase and was shot twice.
Clayton County Police Lt. Francisco Romero then chased after Ross. After a short distance, Ross pointed a gun at Romero, who then fired at Ross.
Ross was struck in the head and transported to Atlanta Medical Center, where he's currently being treated for injuries.
Barney was taken to Southern Regional Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries.
According to the GBI, a witness saw Ross had two handguns while fleeing the apartment. The witness said Ross threw one of the guns into the woods behind an apartment building. That gun was later located by an ATF K-9.
Ross will be charged with murder, the GBI said.
