Police: Bulletproof vest would have covered area of fatal gunshot wound

Report: 2 cops wore no vests in drug raid

RIVERDALE, Ga. -- Riverdale Police have revealed new details about a no-warrant raid that resulted in the death of a police officer.

Riverdale Police say that Major Greg Barney was one of two police officers who did not wear a bulletproof vest to the raid at the Villages on the River apartment complex on Thursday.

Barney was killed in an exchange of gunfire when a suspect fled an apartment during the raid.

Assistant Police Chief Michael Reynolds said that Barney was one of three Riverdale Police officers who provided "assistance" in the raid. Two of them, including Barney, are on the police department's command staff. Reynolds said command staff routinely don't wear bulletproof vests, because they typically work behind desks.

"The command staff, a majority of us don't wear a vest. We just carry them with us," Reynolds said.  "But sometimes we're going to get into a situation, directly involved, we'll strap the vest on. I'm pretty sure that if Major Barney knew he was going to be directly involved in that, he probably would have placed the vest on."

But Assistant Chief Reynolds said he has occasionally gone on such assignments without wearing a bulletproof vest.  "Sometimes something can happen at the spur of the moment, a split second, and you may not have time to put your vest on – you're not even thinking about putting a vest on," Reynolds said. "You're thinking about dealing with the situation right now."

According to Reynolds, Clayton County Police led the operation. When Clayton County notified Riverdale PD of the operation within Riverdale city limits, the three Riverdale police officers volunteered to assist..  One of them, a police captain, wore a bulletproof vest. The other two-- Barney and another Major --  did not.

Reynolds said Riverdale officers were part of a briefing on the operation prior to the delivery of the warrant.  He said the officers proceeded directly from the briefing to the raid, where Barney was fatally injured.

Reynolds told 11Alive News that the fatal gunshot struck Barney in the mid-torso, "an area that would normally be covered by a vest."

The suspect, Jerand Ross, was shot by a Clayton County police officer. He's being treated for his injuries at Atlanta Medical Center.
