Douglasville middle schoolers accused of running drug ring

One of the teens was caught with a loaded gun at school.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -- A 14-year-old student was arrested after he brought a loaded handgun and marijuana "packaged for sale" to school, authorities said.

On April 26, a school resource officer at Chestnut Log Middle School got a tip just before the end of the day that a student had the weapon at school.

After a search, school officials found the loaded 9mm handgun, drugs and almost $200. Authorities arrested the student on the spot.

After investigating further, authorities found that three other teens at the school had been trying to distribute the drugs seized by the 14-year-old. All four of the students had distributed marijuana before, authorities said.

All of the juveniles were arrested and charged with several drug offenses, including the possession of a handgun, possession of the handgun during a drug transaction, possessing the weapon on school grounds and conspiracy to distribute marijuana on school grounds.

None of them are being identified because they are under age.

In a news conference Monday afternoon, Sgt. Jessee Hambrick from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said this case is the first of its kind for the office.

"I've been in the business for 27 years and I've asked several people here at the department, and I don't think any of us have ever seen anything like this," he said.

Hambirck said the teens had a sophisticated operation, using cell phones and social media to fulfill deliveries.

Parents of students at the school told 11Alive's Ron Jones they are baffled by the allegations. But mostly, they were left wondering where the teens' parents were.

"It all starts with the parents. That's what I have to blame that on," Dereck Russell said. His son attends the same middle school where the bust happened. "You see he's just 14. He's just been on this earth for 14 years. He really doesn't know what's going on so once again I put that on the parents."

11Alive asked whether an adult was involved in the case, but investigators declined to comment. However, they did indicate that more arrests could be made in the future.
