Sheriff: Woman mistaken for deer, fatally shot by hunter

MARSHALL, Ark. (AP) - Authorities say a woman was fatally shot by a hunter in north-central Arkansas.

Searcy County Sheriff Joey Pruitt says the 29-year-old Marshall woman died Tuesday. Pruitt tells Mountain Home radio station KTLO that a man who was hunting with his son west of Marshall mistook the woman for a deer and opened fire.

The sheriff says the woman was not wearing "hunter orange." No names have been released.

Arkansas State Police and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission are investigating the death.
