Suspect crashes stolen car with baby inside

Police in Smyrna are looking for suspects after a car was stolen at a gas station with a baby inside. They led police on a chase that ended in a crash.

SMYRNA, Ga. -- A car with a baby inside was stolen from a QuikTrip in Smyrna Tuesday evening.

Smyrna Police Officer Louis Defense said a father was at a QuikTrip location at East-West Connector and South Cobb Drive in Smyrna shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday. When he stopped at the gas station and went to the passenger side of the car to check on the child in the child seat, the suspect jumped into the driver's seat and drove off with the car and child.

Defense said the suspect led police on a short chase, which ended in a crash on Cherokee Trail, off of Windy Hill Road. During the chase, police realized the car was being trailed by a second vehicle with five or six men inside.

When the first car crashed, the other males abandoned the trailing vehicle and fled on foot. Police described all suspects as black males.

The child was unharmed and the suspect who was driving the stolen car was arrested. Defense said police are searching for the other suspects.
