Teen indicted for killing woman at MARTA bus stop

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- An 18-year-old man was indicted for shooting a woman to death at a MARTA bus stop in DeKalb County.

Christopher Merritt has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault in the death of 19-year-old Marcaysia Dawkins.

The shooting happened Nov. 23, 2014, while Dawkins waited for the bus at the Fairington Road stop in Lithonia. Merritt approached and tried to steal her purse; when she fought back, he shot her twice and then ran off with her belongings.

"It's truly a disturbing thought that Ms. Dawkins could have been anyone on any given day," DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said in a statement. "The life of a vibrant, young and hardworking 19-year-old woman was taken away in broad daylight."

An arraignment date for Merritt has not yet been set. He is also a suspect in several armed robberies and sexual assaults. Evidence collected at the Fairington Road murder scene tied Merritt to the assaults.
