ATLANTA -- Gas prices are down about a half penny across the board in the Atlanta area overnight. But, that $4 a mark is still pretty tough for many drivers to pay and they're turning to MARTA.
Thursday, public transportation agencies across the United States are asking drivers -- if they don't do it everyday, for at least today -- to park their cars and ride public transportation like MARTA. It's an effort being dubbed "Dump the Pump."
MARTA officials say as gas prices have gone up, so is the number of people riding MARTA.
Packed MARTA parking lots are one sign, employers asking about discounted passes for their employees is another.
The record high gas prices across the metro area motivating drivers to use alternative commute programs.
The Clean Air Campaign reports more than 3,000 drivers have converted to carpooling or public transportation since January. Its "Cash for Commuter" program that pays drivers $3 a day up to $180 dollars more than tripled in May...and almost quadrupled this month.
Atlanta is not the only city taking part in Dump the Pump. At least 31 cities across the country are encouraging drivers to take public transit. Some systems are giving free rides today. However, MARTA is not.
