ATLANTA (AP) -- The podium for Congressman John Lewis' stood empty as the two candidates to unseat him tried to paint the 22-year incumbent as out of touch.
Criticism from the Rev. Markel Hutchins and state Representative "Able" Mable Thomas came even as the challengers praised Lewis for his long record of public service during a televised debate. Lewis did not attend. Lewis, Hutchins and Thomas are seeking the Democratic nomination in the 5th Congressional District of Georgia. Lewis has served as the district's representative since 1987 and has not faced a Democratic challenger in 16 years.
Thomas called into question Lewis' judgment on the issue of the war in Iraq and said that Lewis has not been focused on his constituents.
Hutchins said 22 years is too long to be in any public office.
