
In Thursday's consumer and money headlines, new critical updates on the way from Microsoft, and a new recall from BMW.
A record number of updates for the Windows operating system are now available from Microsoft. It's a series of 26 updates, with 17 of them listed as critical. That's the most, says Newsfactor.com, since August, 2006.
German automaker BMW is recalling 200,000 2006 3-Series, and the 2004 to 2006 5-Series and X-Series SUV's over concerns about the front passenger airbags possibly not deploying in a crash.
Electronics retailer Best Buy is joining AT&T and Apple in selling the iPhone.
The Minneapolis based chain is setting up mobile phone departments within its retail locations to sell close to 95 different cell phones including the Apple iPhone. The centers will open on September 7 and will give rebates on site rather than have customers write away for them.
China has found one way to deal with car pollution which has been a major issue during the Olympics. For a nation that buys 10 million cars a year it's simple -- raise taxes.
For the bigger cars the sales tax will be doubled to 40 percent; For the smaller cars, it will be 25 percent. But for compact cars with engines under one liter, the sales tax will be a scant 1 percent.
