CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- The Secret Service has confirmed they have evacuated the Denver area headquarters for John McCain's campaign after a white powder was found in an envelope.
The Secret Service has confirmed they have evacuated the Centennial office for Sen. John McCain after a white powder was found in an envelope.
The Secret Service says a staffer opened the envelope around 3 p.m. local time at the office at 6334 S. Racine Circle near Arapahoe Road and Peoria Street.
According to the Secret Service, the envelope also contained a letter with a threat against McCain. Arapahoe County, Colo. Sheriff's Department Haz-Mat is responding, and is trying to determine if the powder is hazardous.
Officials said four people at the office took themselves to Sky Ridge Medical Center to be checked out.
Twelve people were quarantined outside the Colorado office, including three police officers, two firefighters and seven civilians, said Andy Lyon of Parker South Metro Fire Rescue Authority.
"Our guys did not find any powder. There were maybe a couple of grains of something inside an envelope and they had to kind of work to get a sample," Lyon said.
It is an ongoing investigation and the Secret Service says agents and officers are responding.
